Dog Bite Claim Results in $120,000 Award - Accident Lawyer

Dog Bite Claim Results in $120,000 Award

Chicago, IL (Law Firm Newswire) July 29, 2022 – Two girls attacked by a dog on their walk to school recently received $120,000 in compensation for their injuries with the help of attorney Paul Greenberg. The award included $20,000 above the applicable insurance policy limits.

Children suffer dog bites more often than older age groups, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Typically, children experience dog bites while participating in routine activities. Parents and caretakers must keep an eye on little children. However, accidents can still happen.

About half of all children will be bitten by a dog at least once before graduating high school. In this case, that statistic is particularly glaring: The injured girls were on their way to school, working toward that graduation date when they suffered the shock and injury of a dog bite attack.

Approximately 4.5 million people in the US are bitten by a dog each year. About 850,000 people require medical attention after a dog bite, including about 400,000 children each year. Nearly 1,000 people nationwide go to the emergency room for a daily dog bite injury. In 2018, about 27,000 people needed reconstructive surgery to address a dog bite.

About 2,000 of the US’s annual dog bite attacks happen in Chicago. While not all of these go to court, those that do may result in compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, and other losses.

In 2021, homeowners insurance policies covered $882 million in dog-related injury losses nationwide. The average cost per claim increased 134 percent between 2003 and 2019. Drivers for the cost increases include rising medical care expenses and gains in the amounts of settlements, judgments, and jury verdicts. These costs are a concern, especially when a dog bite claim involves a child, as physical and emotional scarring may persist for decades.
