Sickle cell anemia, a blood disorder that primarily affects Black and African American people, can cause severe pain and shorten life expectancy by more than 20 years. Yet, few children with the disease are getting the recommended screening and treatment to prevent life-threatening complications such as stroke.

Many Children with Sickle Cell Anemia Not Receiving Lifesaving Screening and Treatment

In 2019, less than half of children aged 2-16 years with sickle cell anemia received the recommended screening for stroke, a common complication of the disease, according to a new CDC Vital Signs report.
